The Gift Of Knowledge And Video Games

The gift of the Holy Spirit called the gift of knowledge is the gift by which our intellect is illuminated to find truths about God present in creation around us.

So it is the gift of knowledge that enables you, when you look at the vastness of the ocean, to think- wow! How great must God be to have made all this. Or again, you take a cold shower on a freezing cold morning and think to yourself, "my goodness, hell must be truly awful". Or again, you think of how much your mother loves you when she goes out of your way to pick you up from somewhere, and you realise, "My Lord and Saviour loves me to a degree miles greater than this".

Well it's entirely possible for us to see and appreciate aspects of Almighty God's plan of salvation when we play video games.

I think a lot of my posts on this blog are about this really.

Let's pray for the gift of knowledge when we play video games, that we will move from them to appreciate the eternal truths about God, and that way even playing games can help at our sanctification.

20Mm Big CoC At The WHC Gavrus: Part 1

I've been badgering Mark Freeth about CoC for about a year now, first of all to do it in 20mm, then of course its turned into 28mm. Meanwhile, The group of lads from Huntingdon who do an annual game to remember their sadly missed old friend Carlo were coming to Basingstoke.
Now I knew they had played CoC, and I also recall Carlo being partial to the game, so I thought it ideal to use them as guinea pigs for trying out Big CoC! They were more than happy to go along with it, so a format was put together. As the 28mm stuff is still being painted (nearly done though!) this weekend would have to be in 20mm
I thought that for 8 players, a Big CoC campaign of 4 games over the weekend from Friday night through to Sunday afternoon would work fine. I allowed for an extra scenario just in case things went a bit quick.
What to do?
An obvious choice was Normandy, I had all the kit required, and of course, Mark has his amazing collection of Mick Sewell buildings which were aching for a run out.
I only needed a reinforced company for both British and Germans, plus various AFV options, all of which we had.
The scenario was to be the action at Gavrus on 29/30th June 1944, when the 2nd battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders came under ferocious attack by the 10th SS 'Frundsberg' division.
The battle is reasonably well documented, particularly in Iain Dalglish's book "Operation Epsom: Over the Battlefield" which includes some fantastic aerial photographs of the area taken just days after the battle, these would substitute perfectly for maps.
I came up with 4/5 scenarios with games running into each other to replicate the fighting:
The first was a bit of a "what if" with infantry companies from each side recce-ing the village of Bougy about a mile South of Gavrus, the Germans supported by an armoured infantry platoon in half-tracks and the jocks by their carrier platoon. Both sides did recce Bougy, but I doubt they did it in such strength or necessarily at the same time, but I thought it would give a good introduction for the players, and set the tone for the weekend.
This was to be a fairly standard Patrol scenario as per the CoC rules, with each side receiving an additional 8 points of support to be drawn from a fairly limited selection
                                                           Main road at Gavrus

                                                          The British briefing:

                                                   Scenario 1:  BOUGY- BRITISH
This depicts the action between The 2nd Argylls and the 10th SS Frundsberg Division early in the morning of 29thJune 1944, around the village of Bougy. This is a patrol action as per the main CoC rules. National characteristics as per the main rules.
7 Patrol Markers will be placed along the respective baselines, resulting in 6 Jump off Points. Vehicles will enter via the Gavrus road.
The adjutant may either: Act as an off table senior leader for 1 platoon. OR for the entire company, in which case he will just add +1 to their deployment rolls

D-E-D Dead!

What's going on everyone!?

Today for the #2019gameaday challenge I played a game of Colt Express on the mobile app.  It was a great game but I'm a little biased about the game, lol!

I didn't end up winning but I felt a bit rusty with the game. I can't wait to play it again and trying to win!

As always, thank you for reading and don't forget to stop and smell the meeples! :)

It's Alive!

In the architecture office, my colleagues would often use a curious phrase when making design decisions: "This is what the building wants to be."

Why the anthropomorphism?  I suppose it's quicker than saying, "This seems to me to be the project's most natural direction, based on previous design decisions."  And it sounds more emphatic, not to mention a tad romantic.  After all, there is a mysteriousness to creative thought and the amount of influence our unconscious intuition has on that process.

There are so many different directions a design of any kind can take. It is a tree of possibilities, and each branch offers a number of new, unique choices. And like those "Choose Your Own Adventure" books I enjoyed as a child, if one of those branches leads to an undesirable conclusion, it's simple to back up and follow a different branch.

Game design is no different.  There are so many options for a designer, and each one influences future decisions. At a certain point, I have an intuitive feel for "what the game wants to be," even if it has changed from my original vision.

And that may be the best answer yet for why I view my inanimate projects as if I had designed them to evolve on their own: it's an acknowledgement that, more often than not, the process takes me down paths that I could not see at the outset.  I began with a goal and a vision on how to get there, but in the process of writing rules outlines and flowcharts, of prototyping, testing and tweaking, the journey revealed other interesting paths that I simply could not resist.

It's experiencing the unexpected that make me feel less like I'm in control and more like I'm playing a game--the game of game design.

But I am in control, of course--at least to the point of making the final decisions, of choosing the next branches of the decision tree to climb, and finally declaring when I reach the top, "This is what the game wants to be!"

(Sample) Size Matters

Sample Size Matters
On this blog and others, on twitter (@mwkraus), at conferences, and in the halls of the psychology building at the University of Illinois, I have engaged in a wealth of important discussions about improving research methods in social-personality psychology. Many prominent psychologists have offered several helpful suggestions in this regard (here, here, here, and here).

Among the many suggestions for building a better psychological science, perhaps the simplest and most parsimonious way to improve research methods is to increase sample sizes for all study designs: By increasing sample size researchers can detect smaller real effects and can more accurately measure large effects. There are many trade-offs in choosing appropriate research methods, but sample size, at least for a researcher like me who deals in relatively inexpensive data collection tools, is in many ways the most cost effective way to improve one's science. In essence, I can continue to design the studies I have been designing and ask the same research questions I have been asking (i.e., business-as-usual) with the one exception that each study I run has a larger N than it would have if I were not thinking (more) intelligently about statistical power.

How has my lab been fairing with respect to this goal of collecting large samples? See for yourself:

Anime Iowa 2014!

Hey everyone!

I'm back! (Did you miss me?)

Today I'm finally going to make a post that I've wanted to make since the beginning of August. (Time flies when you have a job, I swear. Wow.) And that blog post would be: Anime Iowa! It's a super fun convention in the state of Iowa that of course is centered around anime, but it also (thankfully) has its fair share of other geeky things, like Doctor Who, video games, plus lots of cute fantasy items.

Anyway, this year was as fun as the last, and I took over 600 photos! (Don't worry, I'll only spam you with a few of my favorites!)

So, let's get started!

Me! I went as Mey-Rin from Black Butler, and since I didn't want to do the same thing as before, I decided to alter her costume to make it into the way she appears when she uses her guns. (Which I made very quickly out of cardboard shortly before Anime Iowa, haha. They're not very pretty to look at, but it's my first time making a prop, and I'm proud of them darn it!

And these three were fantastic. From left to right, 11th Doctor, 10th doctor, and River Song!  The 11th Doctor was so in character it was great fun to watch him at the photoshoot!

And the 9th doctor, and the 10th together. With their psychic paper, of course!

I really can't even imagine how many hours must have been put into this. Seriously, a fantastic job!

Deadpool + Loki? Oh yes.

There was even a Rumpelstiltskin from Once Upon a Time at Anime Iowa this year. Which was basically the best thing ever. Even talked like him. It was hard to suppress my inner fangirl at this point.

And then me and the boyfriend got all dressed up for the rave. Which, neither of us are exactly big fans of raves, but any excuse for me to dress up in a crazy amount of glow sticks, and I'm all for it!
(Honestly, I think my rave outfit was my favorite I wore at AI this year..)

And then this is the absolutely gorgeous outfit I bought at Anime Iowa this year. I got everything except the corset from a fantastic shop called Back to Earth Creations and I got the corset from Scoundrelle's Keep. I'm absolutely in love with all of it.

And so this was everything I bought this year during my Anime Iowa trip. The book Dragon Age: Asunder was actually bought at Barnes & Noble before I went to AI though, but I included it since it was in the same trip! The outfit I got is on the left, then some dice pendants, elf ears, a sonic screwdriver, dragon eye necklace, blunderbuss, a cute miniature replica of sting from the Tolkien books, Arwen's necklace, and the mockingjay pendant.

Yes, I go to anime conventions and get absolutely nothing anime-related what so ever. It happens..

And now, because I'm a loser that likes to pretend I'm a good photographer, I took pictures of the sky for each of the days I was down at Anime Iowa. Behold:

 (double rainbow!)

So, that was my trip to Anime Iowa. It was a nice relaxing (and somehow still very hectic) trip. And i can't wait to do it next year. :)

Thanks for reading!

Have you been to a convention?

So I have a short adventure that James Raggi of Lamentations of the Flame Princess will be releasing at GenCon (the Lord willing and the creek don't rise, as my grandpa used to say).  OSR2 is my attempt to write an adventure in line with the Early Modern Age of Horrors default setting of LotFP, but it should also slot into more traditional faux medieval worlds with just a little finagling.  As I was writing the manuscript I was thinking about several things: the old TV shows Cheers and Gilligan's Island, module T1 The Village of Hommlet, and the old film version of Lair of the White Worm with Hugh Grant and Amanda Donohoe.

The interior art is by Yancy Beterly, a.k.a. Journeyman1029.  He streams on Twitch as he works, so I got to see my module come to life in real time.  Very trippy.  This is Jman's first LotFP gig and I hope he gets more paid work in the RPG world.  He's also done some indy comics and sells things like t-shirts and prints online.  If you do a google image search for either of his monikers you'll find some of his work.  Great stuff!
